Upgrade Hell

We have spent most of our holiday up grading computers. We actually still have some hair left.

The computer I'm on obviously works. I've been finding my favorites and such, making email accounts work, setting up stuff for the kidlets. The other computer... had issues. Tons of issues.

On the plus side, I must report that Charles has been an excellent teacher. He's been letting me do some of the work. I have new found respect for people that build computers everyday. Whoever thought of those TINY pins should get a rude dressing down or something. Maybe lashes with a wet noodle.

Don't Ask What Brings This On

I’ve moved two fish tanks in the last 24 hours, so it took me awhile to respond.

Years ago I read a very interesting book about the development of humor. (If anyone recognizes the book or author, PLEASE let me know. I think I want to re-read it.) The author explained how we make fun of the things that scare us, worry us, or threaten us. He talked about the jokes and cartoons concerning Polish and Irish immigrants to the US in the 18th and 19th Centuries. The author examined jokes about people of African decent, then compared our attitudes during and after World War II. (Italian jokes anyone? German? French?) The author ended up with the USSR (Russians or Communists, take your pick) versus the USA and threw in a bit of Ronald Regan. We make fun of our military. We have ALWAYS made fun of our politicians.

Why do we make these jokes?

“They are taking *MY* job!”
“They are under-cutting my business prices.”
“They threaten my family or home.”
“They threaten my country.”
“He’s a powerful (politician, business man, etc.) and needs to be brought down a peg.”
“They have too much power.”

I’ve heard several times “tragedy plus time equals humor”. (A certain ex-husband may find himself in Hell due to those Challenger jokes……) Believe me when I say it’s a matter of time before we hear 9-11 jokes.

It seems these days the only people we can make fun of are blondes and Southerners. Being a blonde Southern lady I have to ignore these jokes if I don’t like them. “What’s the matter? Can’t take a joke?” It doesn’t matter if I can take a joke or not, people will tell jokes.

At least on the internet there’s always this wonderful little invention called the Delete Button.
